Understanding customs clearing fees in Zambia
The phrase “clearing costs” can include several different amounts. We distinguish customs duties and taxes collected under law from the professional fees charged for clearing work, and from other costs such as transport, handling or storage where applicable.
This distinction matters when comparing two quotations: one may include only agency services while another may mention estimated statutory charges or third-party expenses.

What affects our clearing-service quotation
The nature of the cargo, number of line items, available records, customs station, complexity of the declaration and any special approvals can affect the work involved. We review these facts before discussing the applicable service scope.
A truck of uniform packaged goods and a mixed consignment with many product categories may not require the same level of preparation.
Government duties are not agent fees
ZRA assesses duties and taxes under applicable customs rules. Depending on the goods, classification, value, origin and tax treatment can influence the statutory amount. A clearing agent does not set those rates or guarantee a particular assessment.
See our duties and taxes guide for an explanation of the factors involved.
Questions to ask when comparing quotations
Ask what work the agency fee covers; which customs station and procedure have been assumed; whether permits, storage, inspection or transport are excluded; and whether the quoted government charges are estimates or confirmed assessments.
A useful quotation should specify its assumptions and avoid hiding important exclusions in broad labels.
Prepare a more accurate enquiry
Share goods descriptions and quantities, invoice value, origin, destination, transport mode, proposed customs station and supporting documents. Tell us if the shipment includes controlled goods or has already arrived.
Send these details through our clearing quotation form or WhatsApp. We can discuss your requirements without inventing a universal fixed fee.
