Why a customs inspection can happen

Customs controls may include documentary reviews or physical examination of goods. A check is not automatically evidence of wrongdoing: customs authorities use intervention procedures to verify declarations, value, classification and compliance with applicable rules.

We encourage importers to prepare consistent records and retain access to product information if questions arise.

Records commonly relevant to a check

An invoice, packing list, transport document, permits and accurate goods description can help establish what was shipped. For specialised equipment, model specifications or supporting technical material may help.

What is required depends on the nature of the goods and the specific question raised by Customs.

If the declaration and goods do not match

Discrepancies may require clarification, correction or official reassessment. ZRA guidance notes that incorrect declarations can lead to additional assessment and penalties, with release subject to the applicable process.

Avoid changing documents casually after a problem arises. Preserve accurate supplier records and respond through the appropriate formal channel.

Time and cost considerations

Inspection or additional verification may affect the time a shipment remains under customs control. Related transport, storage or handling charges can arise depending on the arrangement and facility.

There is no responsible way to promise that all inspections finish within a fixed period.
