Before you buy or ship a vehicle
If you are bringing a vehicle into Zambia, gather the purchase invoice or agreement, seller details, make, model, year, engine information and identifying numbers. The documents should describe the same vehicle throughout. Also establish where the vehicle will enter Zambia and whether it is being transported or driven.
Different vehicle types and circumstances can be subject to different requirements. Check applicable ZRA guidance and product-specific restrictions before committing to a purchase based only on an informal cost estimate.

Documents worth gathering early
Keep proof of purchase, vehicle identification and ownership records, available transport or shipping paperwork and the receiver or importer details together. Where the goods are arriving through an intermediate country, keep records of the movement and origin separate.
An enquiry that lists only a vehicle price is incomplete. The vehicle description, condition, year and intended entry route can matter to documentation and valuation.
How costs are assessed
Government duties and taxes depend on the applicable rules, classification, valuation and relevant vehicle particulars. A professional agent quotation is a separate matter. We recommend obtaining the correct cargo and vehicle details before discussing figures.
We can review the information you have for a vehicle-related import-clearing enquiry, but a quotation is not an official assessment or customs release approval.
Questions before sending a vehicle-clearing enquiry
What is the make and model? Do the invoice and ownership documents match? Which border or customs station is expected? Who is the importer? Are there shipping or transporter records? Are there permits or restrictions that should be checked for this type of vehicle?
Speak to Three Stripes
We receive import-clearing enquiries from throughout Zambia. Send the vehicle particulars and intended route to our team so we can discuss the documentation and next steps.
Avoid surprises after a vehicle arrives
Ask the seller to confirm exactly what is included in the price and whether transport or other charges are shown separately. Keep copies of any updated invoice rather than relying on a messaging screenshot with incomplete vehicle details.
If someone offers a single all-in figure without asking about the vehicle or route, request a breakdown. Applicable taxes, professional fees and any transport or third-party costs should be differentiated. Official assessments and requirements take precedence over informal estimates.
Before travelling to collect the vehicle, confirm where and how its customs procedure is expected to be completed. Do not assume that physical arrival at the border means the vehicle has been released for use.
